INFOGRAPHIC: Who’s behind bars in EU prisons?

New research published today by the Council of Europe provides a snapshot of prisoners in the EU, and where they come from.

The United Kingdom is the European Union’s prison capital, jailing more people than any other member state. But smaller EU member states like Luxembourg, Greece and Austria hold the highest number of non-domestic inmates.

Despite a slow decrease in overcrowding, Europe’s prisons remained close to capacity in 2014, holding over 1.6 million inmates in total (including non-EU countries).

The average cost per inmate per day in 2013 was €99, ranging from €2.68 per day in Ukraine to over €200 per day in member states including the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden.
